Why I'm canceling my subscription to the local paper.

Not because they'll print anti-choice editorials, but because they'll allow such divisive, inflammatory titles for those op-ed pieces. I get it - free speech, blah, blah, blah. But when they print a headline-like title to an opinion piece and allow that sort of extreme bias in the language used, it gives credence to it as if the newspaper condones it. This is not news. This is one goombah's take on the anniversary of the landmark Roe v. Wade Supreme court decision giving women the right to govern their own bodies. Agree or disagree, leave out inane statement that some of us are celebrating slaughter.

And to clinch my decision to stop having the paper delivered to my office waiting room, today's paper had no mention anywhere on the front page of a little event called a presidential inauguration. And yet there was full coverage when Bush was inaugurated. Doesn't matter who you voted for, an inauguration is news. Right wing fuckers.

  3. I hope you let the local paper know exactly why you're cancelling your subscription. That's ridiculous on both counts.

    3. but you might want to check the letters to the editor page for the next few days to see if it was published (and if there were other like minded subscribers)

    4. There are other like-minded subscribers. That doesn't change the fact that I don't want to pay for this propaganda.

  4. Bravo on not supporting an obviously slanted press outlet. That's just all shades of wrong on their side.

    1. If it were a magazine, and meant to support one view that would be different. But not a "news"paper.

  5. OMG, SAW, I was discussing my cancellation of the daily paper at my book club today. All due to a 1/2 page spread by a known effing misogynist listing out all the problems of our poor little planet and blaming it all on feminists who refuse to stay home and behave themselves.
June 2012. I remember it well.

  6. Well, in my town, we have to deal with the Catholics every Saturday morning, with their dead baby billboards, praying the rosary. And they are as Democrat as any Kennedy!

But yeah, I've noticed the newspapers getting more slanted and the local news is ridiculous.

    1. I don't like that either (actually, I hate it), but they aren't in a position of needing to be unbiased. Is every paper going to go the way of Fox?

    AMEN! AAAAAAAAAAAAMEN!

And brava to you for cancelling the paper.

    UN-believeable!

    1. Thanks! I opened the paper and that headline was a kick in the gut to me. The idea that pro-choice people get their jollies from death is just sickening.

  10. I know you don't want to mention the paper's name but I'm wondering if it was a smaller town paper. A bigger newspaper/media corporation would not allow such blatant titles would they? I'm no historian but from reading and documentaries I gather that 100+ years ago papers were typically very politically charged. I guess some want to live in the same conditions as a 100 or more years ago. It's too bad we can't send those people back to that time.

    1. It's a sizable city, not the little local paper of my own county. The county of the paper has half a million people, and the paper is also distributed in all the bordering counties.

I suppose papers have been a political platform before, but I want a place to find out what's going on in the world, not for propaganda.

  11. I really wonder if future generations will know what a newspaper is other than reading about them. Seems everyone gets their news online these days or by watching TV. I gave up on our local newspaper years ago when it cut out a favorite comic of mine.

    1. Probably not. I get most of my news on-lie or on the radio. But I think it's a shame to see newspapers participating in their own demise.

  12. a lot goes unprinted in our newspapers too. thank god for social media and the internet. otherwise we'd be such misinformed lot on what's going around in the country.
now that the general election is just 3 months away, the mainstream content is so full of shit.
    makes me angry.

  17. If I type what I'm thinking as I look at that headline, I'll just litter your comments section with expletives. Let me tone it down: effing effers have their effing heads up their effing arses, the bunch of effers.

I once made the choice to move away from Colorado Springs because I couldn't bear the conservatism any longer. I fear I'd have to flee your region, to. At some point, such thinking just feels hostile; I know I tried to put up a fight in Co Springs, but eventually, it eroded my soul. I admire that you can remain firm within yourself.

  18. When things get that bad, you'd never forgive yourself if you didn't take a stand. Congratulatins for calling them out and taking action. If they print your name, though, be prepared. We have had the more liberal folks in our very red area be harrassed by those who are offended when you have the audacity to question their view of the world.

  21. Now that is a fumble.

Our local paper features smaller and smaller news content and has this insane section in it where anyone is allowed to say just about anything. I am not easily offended, but want no part in that. Glad that I only periodically read the thing and don't have a subscription.
