Actually, some nights I just eat like this.

It's not all coordinated meals and new recipes around here. Sometimes I just want what an old friend of mine always called a snicky-snack meal. I love to cook, especially for someone who truly appreciates it. It's almost a meditative experience and I can become fully lost in the process. But I have to admit that when I'm on my own, I really don't like to cook at all. Even scrambling an egg feels like too much effort. So generally, I don't. No stove and oven, no pots and pans, no chopping and sautéeing. Just some easy food and a movie. Best of all, there is virtually no clean up. I don't know whether this represents a needed balance in my life or utter laziness. And I'm not sure I care.

  1. That's what leftovers are for - the times when you really don't want to cook. I even freeze some for moments of unforeseen slackness.

    Sounds exactly like me!

I'm not a big cook myself, so easy and fast is usually the way I go. Often I'll just throow odds and ends together and call it meal :)

Hope you had a grrrrrreat day!

    1. I suspect that if I lived alone permanently, I'd find a way to invite people over now and again just so I could cook!

    1. I'm fortunate that my younger son is pretty open to anything I want to cook and that the guy I've been seeing will happily eat anything I make.

    1. Wheat Thins and slices of string cheese. Also, pickles, kalamata olives, a dolmade, and dried apricots.

  7. That's why I always like when hubby went out of town for a few days; I didn't have to plan a meal and could put together whatever I wanted to eat or not eat for a few days; totally relaxing experience I do believe! I think I see most of the major food groups there too represented one way or another!

    1. It's very freeing. And yes, I think I have the food groups mostly covered. I still generally eat healthy food when I'm alone, just not complicated food.

  8. A snicky snack is a great description. I'm rarely alone for dinner, but popcorn or cheese and crackers were my top choices when I was single. Easy and filling.

    1. I've discovered that if I air pop the popcorn and toss it with olive oil and salt it is really good and fairly healthy.

  9. I love cooking but only if someone will be sharing the meal with me. For myself I'd just have a sandwich.

    1. I feel just that way - it's only fun if you are sharing.

  10. I seem to have lost touch with you and I'm so glad to find you again. I'm finish up a five month stay in Jaipur, India and, before that, after 2-1/2 months home, I spent four months in Mumbai ( fabulous romance with a wonderful man way too young for me! ). At any rate, I'll be home at least six months this time to wait for my first grandchild to arrive.

  11. When Jenny's away I either have instant meals (like a cheese and onion pie, potatoes and peas), or I'll cook a proper meal that lasts for a couple of days. I actually quite like cooking for myself, if it's just for a week or so.

    1. I never, never cook a "proper meal" for just me - I don't want to have to eat it several days in a row.

  12. I would never have guessed this from you. Nice to know that it's not all gourmet everyday at your place!

    1. Oh, no, not at all. I have a big old streak of lazy in me.

  13. The important thing is that you made wise choices.
Sometimes we have a meal like this... just what we call "whore devours". A plate of healthy but snacky foods to share. It goes perfectly with a movie.

    1. Everything in that meal was good for me, so I don't feel bad about it. And it's fun filling the plate with treats like that.

  14. my dinner tonight is potato chips and peanut butter and a Tom Selleck movie. ta da! not even very healthy or intellectually stimulating.

    1. Peanut butter isn't exactly bad for you. And Tom Selleck? What's wrong with that?

  15. This is good to know. I really started to think your foodie characteristic dominated all your eating. Being lazy is good balance but as you so correctly stated at the end - who cares.

  16. Balance all the way. I balance myself like that on a regular basis.

  17. Cheese and crackers, plus maybe grapes or apple slices is one of my favorite snickity snack meals :)

  20. Phew, on this, I can relate with you. That looks like the kind of meal I'd prepare for myself...well for the family if they'd have it.
