House of of dogs.

It was my turn to have this kids this Thanksgiving, so we went down to my mother's home in south Georgia. My mother collects dogs, and there is never a time when they aren't watching.
As soon as we walked in the door Thursday, my sister said, "We saved these for you." Because that's the kind of family I have. The kind where we can't make the traditional oyster stuffing without eating some of the oysters raw, and they knew I'd want some. No matter how disgusting they might appear.
Seriously, dogs everywhere. This one is always, always hopeful that someone might be interested in a game of fetch. Somehow, I didn't get a picture of the three-legged dog who easily keeps up with the others.
The weather was gorgeous, and many of the male members spent several hours making a stop action film involving leaves.
Did I mention that there are always dogs around? This ancient, quivering chihuahua seems to be happiest nestled into a chair with you.
The only purchases we made on Black Friday were for that evening's meal, a low country boil. And I did mention the dogs, right? My youngest brother considers it sport to incite them to howling. They fall for it every time:

  1. You know I'm not a dog person, unless its a mild mannered, slow moving variety. And I don't think I could eat a raw or cooked oyster even if you offered me a pile of money! But the film making would have entertained me for hours.

    1. They are actually all very friendly dogs, and mostly just sit around unless something exciting is going on.

      I have always loved oysters.

    1. You can have all of them as far as I'm considered - she'd just go and get more.

  3. Apart from the oysters (blech), it all looks like a great time. How'd the stop action leaf film come out?

  5. we always eat raw oysters at Thanksgiving and Christmas. My super extremely lazy, never-raises-a-hair Himalayan cat just jumped up wide-eyed when I played the howling video. LOL it was funny

  6. I can imagine the hilarity and the chaos---the howling dogs leading to humans howling, leading to more dog howling, leading to humans collapsing around the place laughing. Families---ya gotta love 'em....or? Still Howling here!

    1. Often, it's the human (my brother) who starts the madness. Other times it's a doorbell, a knock, a passing car, or any other unexpected sound.

  7. This post cracked me up!

"And I did mention the dogs, right?"

HA! Yeah, I definitely got the impression your mother LOVES dogs. OMG...that photo of the chihuahua is ADORABLE! My mother too, loved dogs. In fact, she loved ALL animals. When I was a kid, our home was full of critters (dogs, cats, turtles, ducks). It was like living in Animal Kingdom at Disneyworld!

Sounds like you had a terrific Thanksgiving Day.

Have a super weekend, my friend!

    P.S. enjoyed the video clip!

    1. Our home was like that. Over the years we've had dogs, cats, gerbils, turtles, ducks, pigs, a rabbit, a horse. Probably others I'm forgetting. And yet, I'm wildly allergic so I stay at a hotel while I'm there!

  8. Until you explained I thought the oysters were something the dogs had chucked up! LOL

  9. I've gone out on the lonely beach and howled at the moon.

    Afterwards, never felt better!!

  10. There were one or two dogs around then?

I've never eaten an oyster in my life, just the sight of them puts me right off.

    1. Maybe. I'm not sure...

Oysters - you don't know what you're missing. It's like eating the ocean.

(Guess I should have started with a disclaimer about the oysters, huh?)

  12. I like dogs! As long as they are other people's dogs.

It looks like you had a wonderfully entertaining Thanksgiving. I'd personally be willing to forego the traditional meal and eat your Friday meal of low country boil. That looks wonderful!

    1. I feel the same way - I like dogs a lot, but in limited doses. And I don't really want to have to be tied to taking care of them.

  14. so hours making a stop action film with leaves....i LIKE the sound of the guys in your family. sure beats a day of football! and i gotta say i'd probably be among those inciting the many dogs to a good howl. looks like it was a fun celebration.

    1. We're just not a football family. Fortunately! Okay, I'll admit - I've howled along myself at time.

  15. the oysters look truly unpalatable.
the dogs would annoy me greatly, even if they did just laze around.
but your family actually creating a stop action film sounds like a time of hilarity.

    1. The oysters were delicious. I'm not annoyed by the dogs, but I don't care for all the hair. I don't have the patience/interest myself to be involved in that film project.

You don't put baby redskins in your boil?
I'd love to see you slurp some oysters.
    My favorite is Appalachacolas...Mmmmmmmmm

Yeah, those oysters are disgusting looking. I thought at first they were the giblets.

    1. And that would be somehow less disgusting?

    2. Actually, yes. Because the worst part was thinking there was something really wrong with the color.

    3. Ah. To me, they don't look disgusting because I equate their appearance with the wonderful taste.

  19. Any chance of getting the recipe for the low country boil? It looks delicious!! Too cute with all the dogs; loved them howling; Koda was looking around the room for the other dogs, wondering how one snuck in.

I had to laugh about the action film involving leaves; too funny! At first I thought perhaps they were working on a puzzle until I did realize it was leaves.

    Sounded like a wonderful Thanksgiving!

    1. I wasn't the cook, so I don't actually have it. Basically, just shrimp in crab boil, and boiled corn on the cob, quartered new potatoes and sausage all mixed together.

It was a puzzle of sorts!

  20. This Hemingway quote seemed appropriate:

“As I ate the oysters with their strong taste of the sea and their faint metallic taste that the cold white wine washed away, leaving only the sea taste and the succulent texture, and as I drank their cold liquid from each shell and washed it down with the crisp taste of the wine, I lost the empty feeling and began to be happy and to make plans.”

    1. I like that. Oysters and a crisp white wine are the perfect pairing.

  21. Stop action film making sounds interesting. My husband and his relatives all are suckers for oysters (grilled), corn and shrimps. I, on the other hand, is mildly allergic to seafoods so I watch the quantity of what I ate. Those are very cute dogs:-)

  23. We used to have clam bakes when I was young, but I've never had oysters. I am not much for seafood....I always wonder "Who was the first person to decide that they should eat those?" I love the stop action film idea. We have very creative people in our family, too, but no one has thought of that. Of course, it is much colder here over the holidays. What do they do with the film?

    1. I imagine that people who lived by the sea saw other animals eating them and followed suit. We used to have clam bakes when I lived in Massachusetts,

  25. At first I thought the raw oysters pic was something came from inside the dogs. I don't care for raw food. Oysters, clams - not on my list. I do like lobster, scallops and mussels (all cooked).
stop action with leaves - that's different
