Dogs on Parade.

In addition to the radio show last Saturday, there was also a big Mardi Gras-themed dog event going on downtown. I just caught the tail end of it. (snort)
This pair actually came in for the show, and one howled a little right as the singers were wrapping up. Caught up in the spirit, I guess.
There is something long-suffering about this poodle.  I'm pretty sure it's thinking, "Dear God in Heaven, not the silly pink fairy outfit again. Who am I, Tinkerbell?"
Now that's traveling in style. When I'm old, I want someone to decorate a wheelchair in purple and green, give me some flashy jewelry to wear and take me on a stroll.  I'm going to be working on my expression of regal disdain so I'll be ready when the time comes.

  1. I think any clipped poodle is a sad sad dog. Imagine it meeting, I dunno a lab or a retriever, or any "normal" dog for that matter. Poodles must get teased mercilessly by other canines.

    1. I like poodles with an all over summer cut, but not the big fluffy shoulders and topknots and so on. Silly. And ditto painted nails on a dog.

  2. Looked like an interesting dog show; I agree about the wheelchair concept in our elder days. All I can say is I know a certain corgi who would have nothing to do with the humiliation of some of those costumes :)

  3. What a hoot! I LOVE the last picture. A truly pimped out rid for that doggy! But good lord, what is the dog in the first photo wrapped in?

  4. I always amuse myself imagining what an animal might be thinking about playing dress up. I guess with most dogs, if they didn't tolerate it, it wouldn't happen :)

    1. I think dogs don't actually understand what they are wearing, so it;s just a matter of tolerating having anything on them.

Bwhahahahahahhaha! OMG...I DIED laughing when I read that!

    These photos are PRICELESS!

I love that dog in the second photo down (the small one). That's my favorite dog - a Norwich Terrier. It was the dog they used in the movie, "Best In Show."

  9. Are you a dog person? For some reason, I don't see you as being someone who would be "into" dogs. Our Miniature Schnauzer wouldn't wear the sweater our d-i-l (his former owner) tried to use for his winter walks. I've never had any urge to try to dress him up. I don't even dress up myself, let alone a dog.

    1. I'm not "into" dogs, but I like animals in general. I don't think of pets as people, though. If I ever do have another pet, I won't be referring to it as my new child.

  10. Dogs and humans do a have a special relationship. I've learned more about it in recent documentaries. In an experiment a dog had no problem knowing that a stranger was pointing at something they wanted but the ape didn't have a clue. I suspect the dogs enjoy pleasing their masters with playing dress up.

    1. Dogs are pack animals and learn hierarchies easily. They are wired to please whoever is above them in the hierarchy. And also have been domesticated over the years to serve humans in a way that apes have not been.

  11. That last one, the cocker spaniel (?) looks like it should be in mardi gras, garnering bead necklaces.

  13. And no doubt the poodle is thinking,"My God, what are these things on my back? Wings? Am I supposed to be flying as well as looking like a total goofball?"

  15. Your entire post supports a topic I keep suggesting to my students as they cast about for a paper topic that falls under "change in the last ten years": the personification of pets.

    1. Do you think it's just the last ten years, though? This sort of silliness seems more long-standing to me.

The last picture reminds me of Florida. :)

    2. I keep eying it and thinking "I could make that." Stupid. I don't have a dog.

  20. Those dogs do not look very pleased, especially the poodle. The last one looks like he's on a mission, though.

I'm trying to picture that event with cats dressed up. There would be lots of unhappy kitties.
