I also did some non-family celebrating. I have a friend with a birthday just two days before mine and we met downtown for dinner before I left town. At this place, I ordered the same thing I always order - a sandwich made with a wheat roll, fresh spinach, baked tofu, Monterey Jack cheese, herbed tomato, pineapple, roasted onion, walnuts, pesto and mustard. I don't know what it is about this combination of ingredients, but it is irresistible to me. And of course, as with every time we go out to dinner, red wine and lots of laughter. My friend asked the waiter if there were any birthday specials. She is much more assertive than I am about things like that. And I'm glad, because we each got a cookie. I took my chocolate cookie and half my sandwich home for lunch the next day.
After I got back from the Savannah weekend, I had another friend over for dinner. Tomato-basil frittata, asiago bread with garlic butter, and a salad with greens, peppers, cucumber, dried apricots and pistachios. We had this conversation about the salad:
Him: "What is this?"
Me: "A pistachio."
Him: (eating it)"They're good."
(holds up another on his fork) "And what is this?"
Me: "A pistachio."
Him: "I like those. You make the best salads."
Me: "If you find any more, they're all pistachios."
As I was leaving work to get groceries for that meal, I saw this rainbow. I don't know what the next year is going to bring but I know it will just unfold as it will. Being patient with ambiguity is just not my strong suit, but I'm trying.
I like the ingredients of that sandwich, except the tofu, which I've never had, believe it or not. Is it better baked?
ReplyDeleteBaked tofu has a firmer, chewy texture. And usually it's marinated in something flavorful before it is baked. Yummy stuff.
Deletecuddling is not a bad thing at all...lol on the convo about pistachios...i like them too....
ReplyDeleteAnd they are especially good with dried apricots.
Deletecontinued fun celebration. and i am all about the cuddling up too. it;s just....aaaaaahhhh
ReplyDeleteIt truly is.
DeleteEvery last photo in this post is delectable, and I am intrigued and excited by your closing idea of imminent change. In other words: happy birthday!
ReplyDeleteWe'll see - check back with me in a year!
DeleteWhen you describe food it always sounds so D.E.L.I.C.I.O.U.S.!
ReplyDeleteSkin on skin is just beautiful. :)
I can't imagine life without cuddles. Skin on skin rules.
ReplyDeleteI can't either. Wouldn't want to.
DeleteThe meal you put together sounds tastier than the sandwich at the restaurant.
ReplyDeleteYou'd have to try the sandwich, though - it really is wonderful.
DeleteYes, I think the next year will bring wonderful things. :)
ReplyDeleteI am trying to trust that.
DeleteFood, wine, friends, cuddling and rainbows. The good stuff.
ReplyDeleteThe best stuff.
DeleteI love the feeling of skin on skin too. When Jenny's away from home, I really miss our long early-morning cuddles.
ReplyDeletePerhaps they'd be even more enjoyable if we were munching pistachios....
Hmmm - I'm not so much on food in bed.
DeleteYour post contains 3 of my favourite things...food, wine and rainbows.
ReplyDeleteWhat, no cuddling on that list?!
DeleteThat sandwich does sound like a rather exciting array of ingrediants. And touching...I wouldn't want to have to live without it.
ReplyDeleteMay the celebration go on and on!
Thank you - I hope for more!
DeleteHell's Bells, EVERYTHING is better with Pesto!
ReplyDelete(Except red meat, canned peas, BB-Q ribs, Hostess Twinkies, popcorn, creamed corn, Pies, pastries, boiled possom, pancakes, grits, peanut butter, and Breyer's Vanilla!)
I only eat about half the things on that list, but none with pesto.
DeleteHappy Belated Birthday, fellow Tiger! Loved your birthday post below, and this one too. You did it up right; now do the same with the decade ahead. You simply will not believe how quickly 60 comes around.
ReplyDeleteIt scares me, actually. But I'm doing my best.
DeleteYou have had some very special birthday celebrations and I am always thrilled to read about your yummy meals!
ReplyDeleteThanks - I like to celebrate.
DeleteHi, No yours is not a no-reply for me, it comes back from mailer-daemon@google saying : Delivery to the following recipient failed permanently undergroundblog11@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteAlso your replies do not go to my gmail so I never see that you answered my comment. Very strange and you are the only one I get that on. No you do not want to check that box! I did that a few times by mistake also.
Have you tried to answer your own comment?
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure what you mean by that. I don't know how to make my responses go to someone's email - I only know how to respond here in the blog. Every comment I make in response to another comment here comes back to my email address.
Delete"I am convinced I was a cat in another life...."
ReplyDeleteMeeeeeee too! I adore cats!
Happy Belated Birthday to you!!!!
P.S. Beautiful shot of the rainbow!
