When computer gods are frowning.

I spent a couple of hours on the phone this morning with Gloria, the friendly tech support person at AT&T.  We have DSL internet there, and lately I've had to reboot the modem and router several times a week. A week or so ago, it gave up the ghost completely. I called, told her everything I'd already tried and, thankfully, she did not make me go through those steps again. We worked our way through a variety of diagnostics and ultimately she decided the problem was in the very old modem. With the wireless router bypassed, it's hanging in there, but likely a new one will be required.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch... my ailing laptop has developed the click of  death. But only intermittently so the actuator arm must still be able to re-set itself. This laptop is only about 2 1/2 years old but I just don't want to throw good money after bad by trying to fix it. It probably didn't help matters that I've dropped it a couple of times. Anyway, this laptop is too heavy to lug around and I am working my way to pan-computer compatibility here. The plan was to let the iMac be the computer I use for all the accounting and so on, and also for storage of photos and files. And eventually I hoped to get a Mac laptop of some sort to be the computer I take to and from work.  I'd really like a Macbook Air for it's supreme portability. But by eventually, I didn't mean now. In fact, I am waiting for the new version which should be released in 2013, maybe in the Spring?  So la la la, I'm ignoring the sudden startling clicks. But not without precautions - I just transferred all my photos onto a new external hard drive and will copy them onto the iMac. And now I'll just keep using this baby until it implodes.

  1. good idea that you transferred your photos. I hope it doesn't implode until you are ready to have it implode! Computers are great when they are working and we desperately miss them when they aren't. What did we do before them?

    1. Oh, I'd be surprised if it lasts the week. But that's okay, I can do without for a while, since I do have my desktop.

  2. oh those ominous signs of impending doom. glad you were smart about backing up though!

    1. The photos are the only thing I really care about on this thing, so I definitely wanted to save them.

  3. When we had AT&T DSL, I insisted they send me a new modem free of charge after the old one stopped working or I would cancel service with them. They "made an exception" and sent me a new one and that one didn't work either! This was after I temporarily set up one I ran out and bought at a Best Buy, so it wasn't like I didn't know what I was doing. I gave up and kept the one from Best Buy and ended up just getting cable Internet service a few months later.

Good luck on the laptop lasting for a while longer. My advice is to never do a shutdown if you can help it.

    1. I can't cancel - DSL is our only option at the office.

      Why never do a shut-down?

  4. I had the same thing happen to me a couple of times with my DSL service as well. I use Verizon. But anytime it happened, their tech support got me reconnect and running quickly. That one of the things I love about Verizon - they're fast on support.

I have both a desktop and laptop computer. Last year, right around this time, my desktop DIED, so I went out and purchased another one because it's hard for me to work solely on a laptop.

I've been wanting to get a Mac computer so bad, but the prices are outrageous. But it's so worth it in the end because they last forever.

    Good luck with your laptop!

    1. AT&T was good about support. At least, the business customer support is good! But that modem is ten years old, so I'm not surprised there are problems with it.

I like having a both a laptop and a desktop, too, since I have a fair amount of work-related computer stuff to do. By right now, I'm answering questions on my iPad!

  5. def a good idea to rip anything that you would not want to lose...have killed a couple laptops over the years and its not a lot of fun...ack...computer problems, i hate them....

    1. My most spectacular laptop death was the one I spilled a glass of wine on. Fried the mother board. The computer shop was able to recover most of my photos, but it cost me, Lesson learned!

  6. My dd had two computers that bit the dust in less than a total of three years. We managed to get them up and running again by installing Linux operating systems. It's a bit funky, but at least we're still getting some mileage out of them.

    1. I just don't want to put any money or effort into a computer I don't want to keep.

    2. Same here. It pains me to treat anything short of a paper napkin as disposable, but computers have reached that point.

  7. for what it's worth, i bought my macro for zero down and zero interest for 12 months. i got in paid off in twelve months and that is that!

soon there will not be laptops either: just tablets. but for now i wish you that light light mac.

and bijoux, how come never shut down?

    love to you, cs

    1. Wouldn't help me since the computer I want isn't available yet.

I wonder about the tablet-only predictions. Seems like there are reasons why people might insist on having computers with real a keyboards available. TableTs are useful for light work, but cumbersome for other jobs.

  8. I'm a long time Mac lover. What I don't like about the air model is the limited connection options. Basically it's Wi-Fi so if your Wi-Fi is out you're out of luck. The Mac pro I'm typing on is a few years old and still works good. I few hiccups lately when it recovers from sleep mode. It has ethernet, USB's, Firewire, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi. Personally I think people make the mistake of getting too big of a screen. Need a big screen? Get a desktop or separate monitor. The big screen ruins the portability of the laptop. Sorry for the rant.

    1. But I don't want a MacBook Pro. Too heavy for my purposes. I don't mind relying on wifi because I've also got my desktop. I've never gone for big screens on laptops - my focus is small and light. And heck, even this iPad's screen is adequate for viewing photos or watching a movie.

  9. A tech person told me that there is a limited number of times you can shut down and start up a hard drive. I don't know if it's true or not. Plus, I've only gotten the blue screen of death after turning the computer on, never while it is already running, so I'm paranoid about shutting down when it's acting up.

You probably checked this, but we had a weird clicking sound once and it turned out to just be a dirty fan.

    1. Naturally, I looked this up and there seems to be no definitive answer, but the general consensus seems to be that there is no real problem with shutting down and re-booting. And for environmental reasons, you should shut down your computer if you'll be away from it for a while. And I actually have gotten the blue screen of death while running a computer!

  10. That's good that you transferred your photos to an external hard drive.

My old computer was a PC, and one day when I turned it on, the screen was black and I heard a pop and a hiss. Not good. I bought a Mac after that, and I'm glad I made the switch.

  12. I'm sorry for your computer troubles. I don't know how my old desk top at home has kept limping along for as long as it has. Not sure what I will do when it goes. It is nice that you have a definite thing in mind that you want when it becomes available. Something to look forward to!

  13. I have a laptop (large screen) and then a netbook for porting which I find a perfect combo.

Having said that I have total sympathy for your current situation and yes, waiting for the new mac is a good idea.

    1. I had a netbook and really didn't care for it. It was light and portable, but I just found it poky and hard to work on. I hope the macbook air will be the hybrid that works for me.

  14. Sorry to hear about your gadget problems. I remember just last year, I had to reformat my laptop because of a virus and I lost everything (yeah, not so wise).
Anyway, we are thinking of getting a iMac maybe next year too.
Hope everything works out for you:-)

    1. I do like the iMac - it takes some getting used to if you've been using a PC (as I have been for more years than I care to think about).

  15. I'm using a MacBook Air, the most recent, and I'm guessing the next one will be even better. I have been really happy with Mac laptops. They don't get viruses and they do everything I need them to in a user-friendly way. Very portable too, which was wonderful whlie I was in university and carrying it with me everywhere I went. Good plan you have, I think.

    1. That's good to hear. I like how light-weight the Air's are compared to the MacBook Pros. If I didn't have a desktop, I might make a different decision, but I want one that's easy to carry.

  16. yeap. you should wait for the new one. I'm using a Macbook Air and it's been great + it also looks good. the 11-inch is very easy to carry. mine is a 13-inch so i do need a rather big bag to carry it. still, i'm not complaining because it's thin and i can do without an ugly laptop bag.

  17. Hope it continues to work for you so you can use it until the new one comes out. Computer problems are my least favorite thing. I do have a netbook to fall back on along with my phone but they are not the same!
